Okay........here we go! Thought we would be able to sleep in a bit this morning, but no such luck. Sunrise was at 5:15 this morning and I think our time schedule is already starting to get out of alignment. We were up by 6:00, but at least it wasn't raining (although still 47 degrees)! As I write this, there is still way too much packing to do, at least for me. Andrea is pretty well set. It is always a struggle to try to remember what you need for a month away from home, so the extra time this morning is probably a good thing. Fiske III is driving us to the airport at around 3:00 and our flight departs at 6:10......Boston to Lisbon and Lisbon to Milan.
This morning's tasks include a dump run, a quick stop at Mahoney's for some cucumber seeds, a few seedling transplants out back and a quick trim on the forsythia bushes along the patio. Hopefully it all fits! Oh ya, and the suitcases!
Catching up on the last week, lot's has happened. Chris and Courtney took a quick trip to Napa for a conference and some R+R. Diane drove out and stayed with the kids while we grabbed the dogs for a few days. It is always fun to have them, but it adds a bit of diversity to your routine! Actually, getting up today at 6:00 was part of our schedule this week!
We also got to see Addie's 5th grade play on Wednesday night......"Imagine a Dragon." It was a lot of fun and the kids were actually quite good. It's so fun to see them grow up! Addie was Chef Parsley!
After the play we stopped by The Local for dinner. It was getting late (8:30) and we were starved. As we were headed to our table, we happened to walk by Tom and Carlie finishing up dessert. There was no choice but to sit down and chat for a while.......which led into 20 minutes......and finally getting to our table around 9:00. It was busy when we got there, but things emptied out while we ate (actually a good meal). By the time we finished, we closed the place down! What a lively Wayland Town Center we have!
And we can't forget a brief mention of the weather this week. It started out great last weekend, and the yard and gardens have exploded......although the weeds are ahead of everything else! We were able to get a fair amount of the seedlings and greenhouse plants out into the yard, but it is a bit of a panic. This is not the best time of year to leave the gardens for a month. We got a lot of work done just in time for a huge rain storm that left up to 7 inches of rain on the south shore. We lucked out with only about 2"! but had to suffer through several windy, miserable days. The sun is peeking out this morning.
So we went at as reasonable pace as we could today, with the normal progress being impeded by detours and stumbles. After Fiske III and I went to the dump, we stopped by Brigham's and Mahoney's on the way home and picked up some cucumber and pepper plants. We managed to get them into the ground and a series of pots by noontime, and then I planted more cucumber seeds in the greenhouse.......then transplanted blue sage seedlings and borage plants into pots. Andrea was not keen on my use of time today!
For lunch, Fiske III cooked hot dogs on the grill and we had leftover parma paninis from dinner last night.......all with plenty of time to spare to pack the car and be ready to pull out at 3:00!
Traffic to the airport was a bit heavy (Memorial Day Weekend) but it moved quickly and we were at Terminal C in 35 minutes. TAP Portugal, like Aer Lingus, tends to fly out of Terminal C rather than E because they rent gate space from Jet Blue at a lower cost. The airport was a bit crowded but we really lucked out having business class tickets......we literally walked to the counter with no one in front of us, while this was the other line (see below):
TSA precheck was a breeze......no line at all, but I got stopped for having a metal 'compass' in my 'pen, pencil and brush' bag with a sharp pin on the end. The ladies thought this was a bit weird, but said it was fine and let me go through.
The Lounge was a Jet Blue/Priority Pass Lounge and was totally packed, but we managed to get seats. The guy in this photo seemed to be a bit annoyed that I was taking a picture!
Funny to have TAP and Jet Blue together!
Boarded right on time!
and away we go!
Dinner was surprisingly good.......smoked duck, figs, and cod.......but ultimately it didn't go down so well with Andrea. Nothing drastic, but a 'bubbly' night. The weird thing about these flights to Europe is that you eat dinner around 7:00, but then you have breakfast at 11 PM. The flight was fast, only 6 hours to Lisbon, so you arrive the equivalent of about 1 in the morning our time. Then on the next flight to Milan we had virtually the same breakfast again, 3 hours later. The body gets really goofed up!
Sunset over the Atlantic was a pretty nice was to end our first day!
