A Day Exploring around St. Mawes.......a Castle, a Church and a Hut

This one is starting from a totally blank page.......so we need to do a little digging! We suspect our problem is that the activities are so constant (and amazing) that we really have trouble keeping up with the day-to-day sequence of events!  Maybe this is exactly what we were looking for.  The ability to both have a wonderful time while not feeling the pressure to remember what we were doing?  It has been a wonderful escape.  The challenge is, without the blog to remember and define our experiences, we might forget altogether!

We can, however, claw back into this........and remember another wonderful morning and a great breakfast on the terrace!

St. Just-in-Roseland Church near St. Mawes

The church is considered to have been founded around 550 AD in honor of St Just the Martyr. For the first 400 years, it was served by the Celtic clergy from the adjacent cell of Lanzeague. Around 950 AD it was taken from the Celtic Church by the Bishops of Cornwall, Crediton and Exeter. In 1140, the church was given by Robert Warelwast, Bishop of Exeter to the Canons of Plympton Priory, and served by their vicars. In 1189 the patronage was recovered from the Priory by John le Sor, Lord of Tolverne, and from that date the incumbents have been Rectors.

The current church building dates from the 13th century. It was consecrated in 1216 by Simon of Apulia, Bishop of Exeter. Described as ‘the most beautiful churchyard in England’ the gardens of St Just in Roseland are a delight.

Being one of the most visited churches in the UK, the 13th century church is set amongst beautiful gardens beside a peaceful tidal creek.

The Hidden Hut !
This was an unexpected and crazy escapade for lunch in St. Mawes.   We had heard about this from the folks at the front desk.......they said it is 'really a hut', difficult to get to and wildly popular.  Little did we know what we were in for!  It was not that far away, but accessed only by the narrowest of roads.  It ends up that there is no parking at the beach, so everyone parks o  the narrow road leading there.  We were not sure what to do but found a space on the street about 1/4 of a mile away......and walked in.  It was a crazy sight to see!  As it was a nice, sunny day, lots of folks were there to visit the beach, which was quite beautiful and unique from what we have seen of this coastline.

The 'Hidden Hut' was not so  hidden, but it clearly was a cluster of three huts.  Apparently these folks have been gaining a great reputation and even have a cookbook for sale!  There was a fairly long line as we had arrived at lunchtime.  The lamb flatbread was sold out so we settled on a couple of Cornish Pasties and a sausage roll.......OMG they were good but way too much food for lunch!  We ate on the hillside and enjoyed the view and the special experience that we had uncovered.  This was a great treat!  Walking back uphill to the car was not so much fun!

THIS IS A VIEW OF THE CARS PARKING ON THE ROAD FOR THE HIDDEN HUT......AT LEAST A 1/2 MILE AWAY......NO PARKING LOT.  REMEMBER THAT THIS IS A 2-WAY ROAD!

ON THE WAY OUT, IT WAS NOT ONLY CARS, BUT HORSES! THAT WE HAD TO CONTEND WITH!

WE DECIDED TO DRIVE THROUGH THE TOWN IN REVERSE FASHION FROM THE NORTH SIDE........ALL YOU CAN DO IS HOPE NOT TO MEET ANOTHER CAR!   AND FINALLY BACK TO HOTEL TRESANTON FOR REST AND RELAXATION!
